BMW Inspection "Major Service - 75-76"


This service is to be done at 8,000 mile intervals beginning at 8,000 miles


Undercarriage
  • Change oil and oil filter
  • Check differential and transmission fluid levels. (Change fluids every 24,000 miles).
  • Check Brakes: thickness of pads and drums. Inspect brake cylinders and dust boots for leaks. Check and adjust parking brake. Check brake system connections and lines for leaks, damage, and incorrect positioning. Check thickness and condition of rotors.
  • Check shocks for leaks.
  • Check exhaust system for correct alignment and mounting.
  • Check for damage or general wear of Hardy disc, center support bearing, constant velocity joints.
  • Check front wheel bearing for play.
  • Check tie rod ends and ball joints wear.
  • Check subframe bushings.
  • Tighten shift linkage on automatic and standard transmission.
  • Check for oil leaks.
Engine Compartment
  • Change spark plugs.
  • Replace air filter.
  • Replace fuel filter.
  • Replace points, spark plug cables, distributor cap, and ignition rotor as needed.
  • Pressure test cooling system
  • Check coolant level. Add coolant if necessary. (See annual check).
  • Check all coolant hoses and tighten hose clamps.
  • Adjust and/or replace belts as needed.
  • Check battery.
  • Check hydraulic fluid level. Add fluid if necessary. (See annual check).
  • Check brake master cylinder and clutch slave cylinder for leaks.
  • Check power steering oil level and adjust steering gear box.
  • Check all fuel hoses and clamps.
  • Check all vacuum hoses.
  • Adjust valves.
  • Torque cylinder head.
  • Check compression
Body Electrical
  • Check operation of instruments.
  • Check heater valve for leaks.
  • Check dash lights and interior lights.
  • Check air conditioner.
  • Check heater, defroster, and fan motor.
  • Check door stops for proper operation.
  • Check windows for proper operation.
  • Check turn signals for proper operation.
  • Check horn.
  • Check lights:headlights, parking, back-up, license plate and adjust headlights if necessary.
  • Check windshield wipers and washers. Adjust jets if necessary. Add washer if necessary.
  • Check sunroof seals and operation.
  • Check and adjust doors; lubricate hinges and latches.
  • Check gas cap.
  • Check tire pressure and tread wear.
  • Road Test.
  • Stamp service book_____(book not found).
Annual Check

(These operations are recommended annually, or as needed; they are not a standard part of the Inspection/Major Service):
  • Change brake fluid.
  • Check operation of master cylinder and servo, and inspect for leaks.
  • Check and adjust headlights and auxiliary driving lights.
  • Check steering:lock angles, threaded connections, power assistance.
  • Change coolant every two years.
Emission Control Service
  • Replace exhaust gas recirculation line and filter every 25,000 miles (on appropriate models).
  • Reset Emission Control service reminder light.
"Minor Service"

This service is to be done every 8,000 miles beginning at 4,000 miles, alternating with BMW major service


  • Change oil and oil filter
  • Check Brakes: Pads and discs. Check hoses and connections for leaks and diitortion. Check brake fluid level (See annual check). Check and adjust parking brake.
  • Check wheel bearings.
  • Check driveshaft Hardy disc.
  • Check for oil leaks:oil pan front and rear engine seals, transmission and differential seals.
  • Check half-axle boots.
  • Check transmission and differential fluid levels.
  • Check clutch hydraulic system and linkage.
  • Check tire pressure and tread wear.
  • Check lighting: Headlights (adjust if necessary), parking, back-up, license plate, interior, glove box, engine and luggage compartment lights. Turn signals, hazard flashers, brake lights, horns, headlight dimmer, and flasher switch and instrument lighting.
  • Check tension and condition of belts.
  • Check battery.
  • Check hoses and radiator.
  • Check dwell and timing.
  • Adjust carburetor.
  • Check windshield wipers and washers. Adjust jet position and add washer fluid if necessary.
  • Check condition and operation of seat belts.
  • Road Test.
  • Stamp service book_____ (no service book found______).
  • Time and weather permitting:Wash car, vacuum interior, clean windows and wipe down vinyl seats.
Annual Check
  • Change brake fluid.
  • Check brakes: operation of master cylinder and servo, and inspect for leaks.
  • Adjust headlights and driving lights.
  • Check body for rust (Warranty Inspection).
  • Flush coolant every 2 years.
